Comparison: WebMCP runs in the browser on your web page, an MCP server runs on a server that AI apps connect to

MCP and WebMCP sound almost the same, and both let AI use your business through tools. But they run in different places, serve different people and are at very different stages. This comparison helps you pick the right one, or plan for both.

The short answer

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is for AI apps: Claude, ChatGPT connectors, Cursor and others connect to an MCP server on the internet and use its tools, without opening your website. WebMCP is for AI agents in the browser: while a visitor is on your page, their agent uses the tools your page offers.

When WebMCP fits

  • You want shoppers or visitors who use AI agents to get reliable answers on your site.
  • The actions belong to the visitor’s own session: browsing, a cart, a quote form.
  • You run WordPress or WooCommerce and want to reuse your existing site. See how to add WebMCP to WordPress and WooCommerce.

When an MCP server fits

  • Your team wants to ask an AI app about your data: sales, stock, tickets, documents.
  • Partners or customers should use your service from their own AI tools, without visiting your site.
  • The work spans several systems, such as a CRM, an ERP and a database. See our MCP server security checklist.

Security differences

WebMCP tools inherit the visitor’s session, so the main rule is: never let a tool do more than the visitor could do by hand, and ask before sensitive actions. MCP servers hold their own credentials and serve many users, so they need strong authentication, scoped permissions per user, rate limits and audit logs. In both cases, validate every input on the server and expose as little data as possible.

Using both

The two share the idea of named tools with defined inputs, so the design work carries over. A common path: start with read-only WebMCP tools on your site, build the data layer (REST routes, validation, permissions) cleanly, then reuse it for an MCP server when an AI-app use case appears.

Frequently asked questions

Is WebMCP replacing MCP?

No. They solve different problems. MCP connects AI apps to systems over the internet; WebMCP lets agents use a web page in the browser. They borrow the same idea of named tools with defined inputs.

Which one should a WooCommerce store start with?

Usually WebMCP for shoppers on the site, with read-only product search and details. An MCP server makes sense when you want your team or partners to use store data from an AI app, such as stock reports in Claude.

Do WebMCP tools need OAuth?

Usually not. They run in the visitor’s browser and use the session they already have on your site. Remote MCP servers usually need their own sign-in, often OAuth.

Can one codebase serve both?

Partly. The data layer, such as your REST API routes, validation and permission checks, can be shared. The tool registration is different: JavaScript in the page for WebMCP, a server process for MCP.
