An MCP server is a small program that gives an AI assistant safe, controlled access to a specific system: your CRM, a database, an ERP, a ticketing tool or any internal API. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard introduced by Anthropic in November 2024 and now supported by a growing list of AI apps, including Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and Visual Studio Code.
A simple way to picture it: MCP is like a universal plug. Instead of building a different integration for every AI app, you build one MCP server for your system, and any AI app that speaks MCP can use it, with the permissions you allow.
How an MCP server works
There are three parts:
- The host: the AI app the person uses, such as Claude, ChatGPT or an AI coding editor.
- The MCP client: the part inside the host that connects to one MCP server and passes messages back and forth.
- The MCP server: your program. It describes what the AI may do and does the actual work against your system.
When a person asks "Which invoices from last month are still unpaid?", the AI sees that your MCP server offers a tool for invoices, calls it with the right filters, gets the answer from your system and writes the reply. Messages use a simple JSON format (JSON-RPC 2.0), so MCP servers can be written in any language; official SDKs exist for Python, TypeScript and others.
What an MCP server can offer: tools, resources and prompts
| Building block | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Tools | Actions the AI can call | search_customers, create_task, get_order_status |
| Resources | Data the AI can read | A product catalogue, a policy document, a record |
| Prompts | Ready-made instructions the user can pick | "Prepare my weekly sales summary" |
Most business MCP servers start with a handful of well-designed tools. Good tools are specific, return compact answers and clearly say whether they only read data or also change it.
Local vs remote MCP servers
- Local MCP servers run on the user's own computer and talk to the AI app directly (the "stdio" transport). They are common for developer tools, files and local databases.
- Remote MCP servers run on a server and are reached over HTTPS (the "Streamable HTTP" transport). Teams use them for shared business systems: each person signs in with their own account, so the AI only sees and does what that person is allowed to.
For company systems, a remote MCP server with proper sign-in (OAuth) is usually the right choice. Our guide on how to build a remote MCP server with OAuth shows one step by step.
MCP server vs API: what is the difference?
An MCP server does not replace your API; it usually sits on top of it.
| Regular API | MCP server | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Programs written by developers | AI assistants acting for a person |
| How it is used | A developer reads the docs and writes code for each endpoint | The AI reads the tool descriptions and decides which tool to call |
| Scope | Often the whole system | Only the actions you choose to expose, in plain language |
| Reuse | One integration per app | One server works with every MCP-compatible AI app |
MCP vs RAG, agents and connectors
- RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) helps an AI answer from your documents. MCP lets it read and act on live systems. Many solutions use both; see our RAG development service.
- AI agents are AI programs that plan and carry out steps. MCP is how an agent reaches your tools; see AI agents with MCP tools and human approval.
- Connectors and integrations in AI apps are often MCP servers under the hood: a "custom connector" in Claude, for example, is added by entering an MCP server URL.
MCP server examples for businesses
- CRM: "Show me deals over $50,000 closing this month" or "Log this call on Acme's account". See connecting a CRM to Claude and ChatGPT.
- Database and reporting: plain-language questions answered with safe, read-only queries. See MCP servers for database analytics.
- ERP and internal APIs: stock levels, order status, approvals. See ERP MCP servers.
- Task and project management: we built one for our own team in October 2026. Claude can search, summarise and update tasks as the signed-in person. Read the case study.
Is an MCP server safe?
It can be, if it is designed for it. The essentials: each user signs in with their own account, the server checks permissions on every call, read and write actions use separate scopes, risky actions need a human to approve, and every call is logged. Our MCP server security checklist lists 12 controls to check before you connect AI to your systems.
Do you need an MCP server?
Consider one when your team already uses AI assistants and keeps copying data in and out of a system by hand, when the same questions about your data come up every day, or when you want an AI agent to take actions with clear limits. If a ready-made connector already exists for your tool and does what you need, use that first.
How UnlockLive can help
Our MCP server development team designs the tools, adds secure sign-in and permissions, tests the server with real AI clients and runs it in production. Tell us which system you want to connect and an engineer will reply with honest next steps.
Frequently asked questions
What is an MCP server in simple words?
It is a small program that lets an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT use one of your systems, for example a CRM or database, through a set of clearly described actions, with the permissions you allow.
What does MCP stand for?
Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard, introduced by Anthropic in November 2024, for connecting AI applications to external tools and data.
What is the difference between an MCP server and an API?
An API is built for developers who write code against it. An MCP server is built for AI assistants: it exposes a small set of actions in plain language, and any MCP-compatible AI app can use it. MCP servers usually call your existing API behind the scenes.
Which AI apps support MCP?
A growing list, including Claude (desktop, web and Claude Code), ChatGPT, Cursor and Visual Studio Code. Check each app's documentation for current support and plan limits.
Is it safe to connect an MCP server to company data?
Yes, when it is built with per-user sign-in, permission checks on every call, separate read and write scopes, human approval for risky actions and logging. A poorly built server can expose too much, so treat it like any other production system.
Can I build an MCP server in Python?
Yes. There are official SDKs for Python and TypeScript, among others. Our step-by-step guide shows a remote Python MCP server with OAuth sign-in.
