Many businesses still run on PHP applications written five to fifteen years ago: a Laravel or CodeIgniter portal, a Yii back office, a custom PHP shop or a WordPress site that grew into an application. After the critical PHP security update of October 2026, and with PHP 8.2 reaching end of life on 31 December 2026, many owners are asking the same question: keep patching, or move to a modern stack?
This guide explains when a move from PHP to Next.js (front end) and Python FastAPI (back end) makes sense, how to do it without losing your Google rankings or your data, and what typically drives the effort.
Migrate or just upgrade PHP?
A migration is not always the right answer. Updating PHP to a supported version is cheaper and is often the correct first step. Use this table to decide:
| Upgrade PHP when… | Migrate to Next.js + FastAPI when… |
|---|---|
| The code is in good shape and your team knows it | Nobody wants to touch the code any more, or the original developers are gone |
| The framework still has security support | The framework or PHP version is out of support and upgrading means rewriting large parts anyway |
| Pages are fast enough and the design is fine | Pages are slow, the front end is old jQuery, and you need a modern design or a mobile app |
| You do not plan new features soon | You want AI features, a public API or integrations that are hard to add to the old code |

Why Next.js and FastAPI?
- Next.js renders pages on the server or at build time, so they load quickly and are easy for Google and AI search tools to read. It is built on React, one of the most widely used front-end libraries.
- FastAPI is a Python framework for APIs. It validates every request with typed models and generates OpenAPI documentation automatically, which makes integrations and mobile apps simpler.
- Python is the main language of AI and data work. With a FastAPI back end you can later add features such as AI search over your documents or AI agents without a second system.
- Your database can usually stay where it is (MySQL, MariaDB or PostgreSQL). Moving to PostgreSQL is optional.
Step-by-step: how to migrate PHP to Next.js and FastAPI
1. Inventory everything
List every page and URL (export them from your sitemap, Search Console and server logs), every form, user role, scheduled job, email, payment flow and integration. The old system is the specification: anything not listed will be missed.
2. Map every URL
Decide the new URL for every old one. Keep URLs the same where you can; where they change (for example /product.php?id=42 to /products/42), plan a permanent 301 redirect. Move page titles, meta descriptions and structured data too. This is what protects your Google rankings.
3. Design the data and API
Describe the database tables as Python models (for example with SQLAlchemy or SQLModel) and define the API endpoints the new front end needs. Laravel Eloquent models, CodeIgniter models and raw SQL queries all translate to this cleanly.
4. Keep user logins working
If your PHP app stores passwords with password_hash() (bcrypt), those hashes can usually be verified in Python, so users keep their passwords. Older apps that use MD5 or SHA1 need a plan: verify the old hash once at login, then store a modern hash.
5. Build next to the old system, not instead of it
For larger applications, replace one part at a time. A reverse proxy sends some URLs to the new Next.js app and the rest to the old PHP app, until nothing is left on the old side. This approach is often called the strangler pattern, and it keeps risk low.
6. Rehearse the data migration
Write the migration scripts early and run them against copies of production data again and again. Compare record counts, totals and random samples until everything matches. Plan how files and images move as well.
7. Switch over with a safety net
- Freeze changes on the old system for a short window and run a final data sync.
- Deploy the 301 redirects and switch DNS or the proxy at a quiet hour.
- Test logins, forms, payments and the most important pages immediately.
- Keep the old system ready to switch back for a few days.
- Submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console and watch for crawl errors.
WordPress to Next.js
WordPress sites have two good options. You can keep WordPress only as the editing tool (headless WordPress) and let Next.js show the pages, or move the content out of WordPress completely. We chose the second option for our own blog in October 2026: we reviewed all 91 posts, kept the useful ones, redirected every old URL, and the blog now runs in five languages on Next.js.
Laravel and CodeIgniter to Next.js + FastAPI
- Blade or CodeIgniter views become React components in Next.js.
- Controllers and routes become FastAPI endpoints.
- Eloquent or CodeIgniter models become Python data models.
- Queues and scheduled jobs move to Python background workers or scheduled tasks.
- Middleware for authentication and roles becomes FastAPI dependencies.
What drives the time and cost
Every system is different, so a fair quote needs a look at the code. The main drivers are:
- the number of pages and screens, and how many are really different,
- user roles and permissions,
- integrations (payment providers, ERPs, CRMs, email services),
- how much data has to move, and how clean it is,
- whether the design is kept or refreshed.
As a rough guide, a content site usually takes a few weeks and a business application a few months; large systems can move module by module over a longer period while the old one keeps running.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing URLs without redirects, which can wipe out years of Google rankings.
- Rebuilding from memory instead of from a full inventory of the old system.
- Migrating the data only once, on launch day, without rehearsals.
- Switching everything at once with no way back.
- Adding many new features during the migration, which makes testing much harder.
How UnlockLive can help
Our PHP to Next.js and FastAPI migration service starts with a free review and a Migration Blueprint: a full inventory, the URL map, the new design and a fixed quote. Then we build next to your old system, rehearse the data move and switch over with zero downtime. If you only need your current PHP to be safe today, see our emergency PHP security update.

Frequently asked questions
Can PHP be converted to Next.js automatically?
Not reliably. AI tools can speed up reading and rewriting code, but a working migration still needs a full inventory, a URL and data plan, testing and a careful switch-over. Treat converters as helpers, not as the migration.
Should I migrate from PHP to Python?
Migrate when the code is hard to maintain, the framework is out of support, pages are slow or you want AI and data features. If the code is healthy and supported, upgrading PHP is usually cheaper and the better first step.
Will I lose my Google rankings when I move from PHP to Next.js?
Not if every old URL is mapped to a new page with a 301 redirect, titles and structured data are kept, and the new sitemap is submitted after launch. Most ranking losses come from forgotten redirects.
Can users keep their passwords after the migration?
Usually yes. Passwords stored with PHP's password_hash (bcrypt) can normally be verified in Python. Older MD5 or SHA1 hashes are upgraded the first time each user logs in.
How long does a PHP to Next.js migration take?
A content or WordPress site usually takes a few weeks; a business application a few months. Large systems can be moved module by module while the old one keeps running.
Can I keep my MySQL database?
Yes. FastAPI works with MySQL, MariaDB and PostgreSQL. Moving the database is optional and can be done later.
