What is pinterest?
Pinterest is a free website that requires registration to use. Users can upload, save, sort, and manage images and other media content for example videos through collections. Images or videos are called pins and the collections are called boards.

- It was launched in 2010.
- It has approximately 50 million users.
- Pinners are mostly female.(pinners in case of pinterest means people who collect images and store it in boards)
- It is online scrapbook(scrapbook is a book with empty pages where you can stick newspaper articles, pictures, etc that you have collected and want to keep. Once scrapbooking was a hobby of many people.)
- It can be linked to Facebook, Twitter and Google.
- There are mobile versions available.
Setting up your pinterest profile:
Setting up pinterest profile or page is very easy. First go to https://www.pinterest.com. You will see a sign-up button. Clicking on it you will get a form to fill out. Fill out some basic information in that form and your pinterest account will be created.
Second step is re-pin some good looking images. Pin an image is when you upload an image to the pinterest site and save it in your board. Re-pin is when you click on an image already in the pinterest site.

What is a pin:
Every image that you post to your pinterest page, either directly from your computer or one that you found on another website, is a pin
Create a board:
Creating a board is also very easy. Go to your pinterest profile page. You will see a create board option. Please see below picture:
Click on the red square plus button and follow some easy steps. Your board will be created instantly. Give your board name something related to your business. For example if you have a software company give your board name like custom software, web design. You can create as many boards as you like. There is no limitations. Whenever you pin or re-pin an image all of your images will be saved in these boards. Actually boards are the collections of images.
How to pinning or re-pining:
You can find images to pin from search function or from the drop-down menu on your profile page:
You will find pictures on just about everything possible. As I already mentioned earlier in pinterest site you will see image like this:
Just click on the pin icon(what I show in the image) and follow the easy step. This image will save into your board. This is how you can pining. This is actually re-pinning. But when you upload image to the site from your own website or from other websites you are pinning. Lets see how it can be done. In your profile page you will see a red circle red button. Please see below:
When you point your mouse cursor over this red circle button you will see “ upoad image” and “save from the site”. By clicking on upload image or save from the site you can save the image in pinterest site into your board. Basically this is how you can pin image in pinterest site.
Pinning Strategy:
- Pin consistently rather than in bursts then drought periods.
- Pin from different sources.
- Pin original content where possible.
- Use many images on your website for others to pin from
How Pinterest can increase web traffic to your site:

When I uploaded these two images to the site I got two valuable back link from the pinterest site. You probably know back link is very important for search engine optimization. Second pinterest users will see these images and if they interested they may visit my company’s website. So I may get more visitors. And more importantly if they chose to re-pin the image I will get back link from their site too. So you can see how pinterest can boast search engine optimization of my official site.
